This was the first 3D Sonic game I actually got to play in full! I also admit that it's the 3D game that I've spent the most time on, more than anything before AND almost everything after it!

Heroes is a bit of a palette-cleanser as far as its tone goes. The Adventure games preceding it had bigger, more epic stories, but Heroes is more laidback with a lighter, simplier that doesn't really get too serious.

This was because this is Sonic's first multiplatform game as a 3rd-Party franchise, and SEGA wanted to bring in new fans by giving this game more of a Classic tone of style.
----------

Sonic Heroes is the story of how 4 different trios of teams go through adventures of their own to fight Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik and his new army of Egg Pawn robots. All of them have their own reasons for their journeys, and sometimes this will involve crossing swords with each other.

Little do they all know... that the enemy they're after is not the true enemy behind the scenes...
----------

The game has a Tutorial you can play, if you want, and it takes place in the Sea Gate as Team Sonic. Omachao has a much more enthusiastic voice compared to Adventure 2, and he will guide you through all of the game's basic mechanics.

For me to summarize, and also to explain certain things that Omochao doesn't cover:

- Sonic is a Speed-type character, who is of course the fastest character of the team. Speed-type characters can use a full team Homing Attack, and a Spin Dash-based Rocket Accel.

- Tails is a Fly-type character. Fly-types focus on carrying their team to higher places and across distances, but only for as long as their Flight Gauge holds out, and it drains while they're flying. A Fly-type's main attack is Thunder Shoot, which is meant to stun enemies and knock down airborne ones. A Fly-type still has a ground attack, but you'll barely have good opportunities to use it in a regular stage.

- Knuckles is a Power-type character, so of course a Power-type is the strongest character of their team. They're almost entirely focused on combat and using destructive, fiery combos to overwhelm their opponents and destroy defenses that Speed and Fly can't break. A Power-type character's attacks may include Fire Combination and Fire Dunk.

Some characters will have very exclusive attacks that only they can use (generally Power the most, Fly the least, and Speed somewhere in the middle), but for the most part, every team controls the same.
----------

Each character comes with a formation when they lead the team, and stages will be structured to take advantage of these formations, such as having gates that automatically change your formation to the one it showed. There will also be messages throughout the game that tell you what formation you should be using to overcome an obstacle.

Characters can also level up to Level 3. The characters' attacks will improve in different ways, and for Power's case, you will even gain new attacks.

For every 4 enemies you destroy, you get a Power Core of one of the two types that you did NOT use to destroy that 4th enemy.

So, for example, if you kill that 4th enemy with Sonic, the Power Core will either be Yellow for Tails, or Red for Knuckles. If you want a blue one for Sonic, beat the enemy with either Tails or Knuckles, hit a Checkpoint with Sonic, or just find a Blue Power Core from an item box.

You lose all of this if you lose a life.
----------

Collecting Rings, performing attacks, and hitting enemies will also raise the Team Gauge. When it's full, you can unleash a full-screen Team Blast that wipes out every enemy nearby, no matter how strong they are.

Even after using this, the Team Gauge will drain away. During this moment, you might be able to perform extra stunts and effects with the team until the gauge is completely empty.

In Team Sonic's case, Sonic can use the Lightspeed Attack. Tails' Thunder Shoot and Knuckles' Fire Dunk will also unleash the Lightspeed Attack if they're launching Sonic with those moves.
----------

You can use the Tutorial as many times as you want to, though one of the non-Team Sonic teams will force you into it anyway when you start their story.

To complete this game's entire story, you need to beat each team's own stories and gather all 7 Chaos Emeralds. This is the first 3D Sonic game that makes you go through Special Stages to get that done!

I'll go through explaining that and more when I start my playthrough of Team Sonic's story!
