Use headphones only with any virtual surround features turned off. Best HRTF effects at 0:08, 0:39, 4:43, 8:00, 14:00, and 14:53. I'm playing this with the Improved LuaJIT Library (doesn't seem to help the framerate), ReShade's SMAA, and the 83FOV patch for vanilla+ gameplay.

This is S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat with OpenAL Soft's HRTF (IRC_1037). There's not much more I can say about this game engine, other than that I really like this bit for binaural audio. Shame it's one of the only human vs human action setpieces in the game, though. What was the point of actually making the combat good in CoP if you just spend 95% of the campaign doing fetch quests while avoiding mutants?

With news that a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 is on its way by 2021, I can only hope GSC Game World will finally make the dream game we've always wanted. The dark, foreboding atmosphere and storyline of Shadow of Chernobyl, the hellish "Faction War" of Clear Sky, and the in-depth sidequests and world scope of Call of Pripyat. Hopefully they'll see how great these videos sound and keep OpenAL Soft for 3D sound in X-Ray 2.

Note that despite having an option for EAX effects, vanilla S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games have no reverb whatsoever. While Clear Sky and Call of Pripyat give the option for using DSOAL (under "Generic Hardware"), it doesn't add any reverb. You also need to put it in as "soft_oal.dll"; renaming it to OpenAL32.dll crashes upon launch in Call of Pripyat.
