The chairman, Police Service Commission, Solomon Arase has cautioned against rushing into the creation of State Police.
Arase gave the indication in an interview with Channel Network Afrique, CNA, in Abuja.
The former Inspector General of Police called for restraint over the issue, citing key fundamental structures that must be processed and analyzed before the nation transits into full blown state police.
The former police chief who harped on need to further reposition the force for better policing said the Commission under his watch has given priority to training and retraining of personnel inline with international best practices and modern policing.
Speaking on reforms, Arase said the commission is presently working on innovation that will help deal with issues related to Police high-handedness and human rights abuses among other acts of injustices against the public.
He however, called on Nigerians to continue to support the police especially in the area of intelligence gathering as it will enable the force to deliver on its mandate of ensuring the safety of lives and properties in the country.
