Chairmen of State Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs) have been urged to adopt open schooling programmes in the basic school system across the country.
Executive Secretary of UBEC, Dr Hamid Bobboyi at a meeting with Chairmen and directors of social mobilization of SUBEBs in Abuja, said exploring new approaches will help Nigeria curtail the growing number of out of school children and other related challenges.
Bobboyi said the initiative was being championed by UBEC to improve enrolment, retention and completion of UBE programmes for Out-of-School Children in a flexible education system that allows participants to learn remotely in an informal manner.
The UBEC boss while urging the SUBEB leadership to own the programme said the mode of education has successfully been deployed by many countries that share similar characteristics with Nigeria to surmount the challenge of ensuring that opportunities are made available for children who cannot go to school.
Meanwhile, the Dean of SUBEB chairmen, Prof. Shehu Adaramaja in his remarks expressed commitment of the states to key into the open School initiative.
The need to further expand the programme across the country was also emphasised at the meeting.
