Summarizing the RTX 4090 issues and Navi 31 in prep for Nov 3
00:33 RTX 4090 power adapter problem, 1:51 using chiplet design now, 3:55 power consumption & performance, 5:31 Ryzen APU’s, 7:19 additional thoughts on APU’s/Processors
My last recording was focused on the processors but I did mention some interesting things related to Navi 31. New information has came out so I wanted to summarize everything to prepare you for the AMD reveals on Nov 3
I am leaving this in the gaming category because the focus of this is gaming video cards
Summary:
Igor discovered the RTX 4090 power adapter melts itself if you bend it left or right at a 35 degree angle. It is known as a 12 volt high powered adapter (over simplified). On Twitter, AMD said they are not using this
AMD has been using the chiplet design in the Ryzen processors for a long time. It has only now came to the video cards. This is a big deal not just for performance but for recycling reasons as well
Der8auer discovered that in some Ryzen processors, they are using the 8 core parts in the 6 core processors (oversimplified). I forget if it was him or someone in the comments that theorized this is an 8 core part that partially failed. Instead of sending it to the bin for destruction, they used it in the 6 core processor cause it still functions well enough
It is highly likely a similar scenario will play out with Navi 31 or the other video cards like it
Supposedly Navi 31 will use 350 watts of power. 100 less than the RTX 4090. If it can match its performance while consuming less power, that is a big win for AMD
I quickly brought up the Ryzen APU's because whatever happens with this Nov 3 video card reveal, will give us a window in to the Desktop APU's of next year (if they happen)
I brought up the current gen Ryzen's as the final part of this recording. The 7000 series processors use less power and are easy to cool. This makes them friendly to first time builders or brand name PC companies
With brand name PC companies, you never know if you are getting a competent builder. If you aren't, then more room for error is granted. If these new video cards are similar to that, then great
