Thoughts on Diablo 4 & Mechanics/Options I miss
00:20 summary, 1:19 things I agree on with the video, 2:04 using Rogue as an example to show the copy and paste, 3:19 nothing new – Crusader, 3:37 versatility of Diablo 2, 4:45 the copy and paste is a bad sign, 6:15 game mechanics I miss – DAOC, 7:44 weapon reach, 9:21 directional blocking
There has been some updates to D4. I went over a summary of that, and mentioned the things I agreed with on the Asmongold video. Then I talked about some other warning signs, and that I think D4 missed an opportunity to bring back some mechanics
TLDR:
The micro transaction heavy side of the game isn't the only bad sign. It is also the copying and pasting with D4 and Call of Duty. I gave an example by pointing out the Rogue is taking things from Assassin (D2), and Amazon (D2)
Bringing back the resource system is concerning as well. Resource system did limit how you built in D3. They need to return to D2 roots where you were given plenty of options. I gave the Paladin and Crusader example. Paladin could do 2H or Shield effectively. Crusader was stuck with shields. Bad design in my book
There are game mechanics and options I miss. I started with Dark Age of Camelot (DAOC). I thought they did a great job with giving options. I used the Armsman and Paladin as examples. They could use chainmail or platemail at end game. It wasn't like World of Warcraft where you hit 40 and platemail was all you did as a Warrior or Paladin
I failed to think of it in time but Elden Ring did weapon reach as well. That, the mech game, and Phantom Doctrine made use of the mechanic. Weapon reach is when a weapon can strike at X squares front, right, left or back of a character. Example 4 weapon reach is 4 squares in those directions. Amazon could of done something cool with that
Directional Blocking is a guaranteed block in a direction. Usually it is a 90 degree cone. War of the Roses had it and balanced it out with shield durability. The shield broke after being hit enough times. Elden Ring did it too and used Stamina for balance. If they wanted a shield specialized Paladin, they could of done something like that
These are just my thoughts on the matter though. Here is the Asmongold video I was referencing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvlzhQsorlo
