Can you really think of yourself as a true gamer if you didn't play Super Mario 64? Find out in this video!

Today I will tell you about my first experience with Super Mario 64, and what I think about this monumental classic of the gaming industry.

Super Mario 64 was the first 3D Mario game, and as such one of the first games made in 3D. Does this game stand the test of time? The answer to this question is in this video.

Everything started as Princess Peach invited Mario to the castle for a slice of cake, and the plumber arrives there. Mario immediately learns that the castle is under siege from Bowser, that kidnapped Peach, stole the castle’s Power Stars and created worlds within the paintings that decorate the castle to hide those Stars.

As the cutscene ended I immediately ran inside to start saving the princess, as I really could not wait to experience this game! And this is important to mention, because, from what I’ve seen other people say, the area surrounding the castle was meant to be used as a training ground to learn all the moves Mario can perform and how the plumber interacts with the environment, but, yeah, I… skipped it… and it actually had some impact on my play through, mostly in the earliest levels.

I was quick to learn that the game wouldn’t have been as straightforward as I expected. Most of the time I spent playing platform games was when I was little, and it was with Spyro and Rayman, which have less, or less interesting moves than Mario to actually move around, and they are overall much easier games.

At first I only found out that Mario could jump, and if you moved for enough distance his running speed would increase over time, and my jumps were affected by the momentum gained during the running. Every time I was able to catch a Star I really felt like I accomplished a challenge, and all the times that a Star would send me back into the castle I took the chance to explore Peach’s house a little and found out that there were two doors locked behind a key.
Whenever you pick up enough Stars you can encounter Bowser in a boss fight, and with a very little struggle, running and jumping was enough, to get me the first 8 Stars and fight him for the first time.

Learning how to play Super Mario 64 was so satisfying for me that it was one of the main drives that kept me playing until the end!

There are three caps used more as tools to overcome specific parts of the stages rather than giving Mario more power in general, and I found it really really cool! The metal cap is my favorite, not only because you can destroy most of Mario’s enemies with it, but also because of its music! Another great feature is the Green Shell, I noticed that it’s rarely mentioned in the other reviews that I’ve seen but I found it really an amazing feature being able to use it as a skateboard, especially in Shifting Sand Land to avoid the insta kill from the sand!

Thanks to the combination of Mario’s moveset, the Powerups and the peculiar challenges that the developers put in the various stages, the level design of this game instantly elevated it to my favorite platform experience EVER.

Every time you catch a Star in Super Mario 64 you are brought outside of the painting, but for a newcomer like me, it was not much of a problem, because it was thanks to repetition that I really got to understand how the game works, how Mario interacts with the environment and how to be elastic in overcoming a new challenge.

Every time I caught a Star in Super Mario 64 it was a real victory, and this sensation was even more amplified when I beat Bowser for good, I was totally satisfied and my expectations for the closure of the game were totally fulfilled, and the best part of it was the stellar final music!

I enjoyed the soundtrack of Super Mario 64 quite a lot, many of those tracks were very memorable and especially the castle’s theme remained printed in my memory, but the final one was really a great treat to end the story.

Super Mario 64 is a game that you really must play, this game transcends time and generations, and if you don’t play it at least once you’re really missing out.
