How Ratchet and Clank was partly inspired by Zelda Ocarina of Time (game theory)
When I was a kid I played a lot of Ratchet and Clank 2, and this led me to buy out of nostalgia a Playstation 2 in 2020! So, I decided to start with the first Ratchet and Clank, and some time later, completely unrelated to this, I also played a Zelda game for the first time, which is Ocarina of Time. After that, I noticed many similar features across these two games, and I really liked that a lot!
It’s not unusual that the best games of all time inspire the creation of something off their success, and when that is done in the right way, something magical can happen.
In fact I’m very happy I found many similarities between The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of time and Ratchet and Clank, because what you’ll find out in this video will give you a new appreciation for both those games!
The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time is a Role Playing Fantasy game, with Open World environments, Puzzles, Backtracking, a money system and a character progression system based on Items and Equipment to find and Health Points displayed as Hearts.
Ratchet and Clank is a Platform Action game, with Semi Open environments, Backtracking, a money system and a character progression based on Gadgets and Combat tools to buy and Health Points displayed as Nanotech.
As you can see both games encourage exploration and feature many items that can be used to complete specific tasks along the way, in fact, most of the similarities reside in the “sandboxy” nature of these titles, who both leave the player figure out how to progress on his or her own by using the tools at their disposal.
Of course there are still many differences within the two games, as Ratchet has a wide arsenal that can’t be seen anywhere else, and behaves much more like a platform game rather than an Open World time traveling adventure. It’s also needless to say that the setting and the tone of these titles is completely different from one another, and also that Ratchet also had major inspiration from Spyro, specifically from the character Agent 9 and the platform nature of the Spyro trilogy, and now that I just started Ratchet and Clank 2 I noticed that most of those similarities seem to not be there anymore since Insomniac innovated the series in a very original way.
The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time is highly regarded as one of the best games of all time, if not even the best of all. Personally, I really think every aspect of it has been created with care, favoring a perfect synergy between each part that makes up the game, such as the music, the story, the gameplay, the art, the exploration and so on… and I think Insomniac really did a good job in taking inspiration with thought, innovation and originality! Unlike many other companies did in more “recent” games.
It is perfectly fine and even likeable when a new game is built on the principles of another successful formula without ripping it off, in fact no one would ever tell you that Ratchet and Clank is Zelda in space, because that is not the case at all!
If you missed out on one or the other of these two amazing franchises I strongly suggest you to give them a try, you will find for yourself that the various analogies I found do actually have place in those games.
