What makes a Video Game actually GOOD? (The art of making a video game)
Video Games are a combination of many arts: storytelling, music, sculpture in the form of 3D modeling, illustrations and more.
Everything comes together to create an interactive experience for the viewer, and immerse who is playing in a story through their actions. Combining all of these features to compliment each other is like cooking a complex meal, that’s why not every game is good. So the question is: what makes a game good?
Since games combine so many things at once every videogame can be praised, or not so praised, for a different reason: its gameplay, its music, its animations and so on…
A good game is the one that sticks in your memory long after completion, the one that you play over and over even if it’s a single player game, the one that you keep annoying your friends with, in hope that they pick it up.
There are actually four major macro areas that create a videogame, which are: the player, the rules that define the game, the size of player’s choice and the art such as music, sound design, textures, illustrations and 3D models.
Watch this video to find out how each area impacts game design and how should be managed by developers to create good games!
