Almost at the end of the video lineup, this time we have a trial and error hack, oh boi, let's see what this one has
Levels:
The hack is divided in 12 levels, each with his own gimmick, since that is all it has i can critique each individually.
Level 1, That's a Wrap, this level was alright to start, featuring platforms like the ones in SMB and the scrolling pipes from SMB3, although some setups felt repetitive, like the surprise shell one, or the one where you jumo from one to another avoiding fireballs.
Level 2, Mole Hole Mountains, the gimmick here is... moles, some spawn indefinitely and some have bombs on top of them, this level was alright, some setups had me stuck but it was alright.
Level 3, Groovy Gravity Grinders Galore, main gimmick being low gravity and grinders/saws, it had clever setups with one or two that i fucked up somehow, but it was fine.
Level 4, Casio Countdown, the gimmick here were those explosive platforms from Yoshi's Island, and of course it had to have a name referencing a kaizo hack, this one had good uses of the sprite, and thank god you can skip one of the puzzles if you are big Mario because some are brutal.
Level 5, Shoplifters Anon, this one is one of my favorites from the hack, the gimmick is like the one in JUMP but shorter and better, you can't grab carry-able items so you must find ways to progress, you also have a low jump, in the secod half you can't jump making things more difficult, my only complain would be that annoying on-off switch section where you have to jump to enter a pipe.
Level 6, Fire Pillar Frenzy, this was another of my favorite levels, the moving fire pillars were cleverly used making tight but fun sections, unlike the next level in the list
Level 7, Any Port in a Storm, the main gimmick is thunder clouds, the setups while being good, some feel tight to deal with, some are fatser than others, and the hurtbox can be janky, im not a fan of this one
Level 8, Blockbreaker Bluffs, breakable blocks are the gimmick of this one, this one was fun to play, and yes, another of my favorites from this entry, you break blocks in order to progress in the level, the first half are regular colored blocks so you don't miss any, the second half has bridge tiles hanging in dangerous places, overall a fun stage, aside for the hooded edge port, i don't like that one (but it doesn't affect anything really)
Level 9, Lever Pull Lounge, yet another of the good levels, this one uses levers to activate switches ala DKC3 (Mill Fever) so you can progress in the level, but the enemies would try to prevent you from such thing such as saws, piranha plants, bowser statues, the levers itself if they deactivate fast, so yeah, fun stage
Level 10, Adolescent Plumbing, this level is my least favorite and one of the stinkers for me, the concept was promising, switching between your Jump and Spin jump while bouncing constantly. Now, the first half was a pain in the ass, the koopa and the podoboo below the on off switch never lined up for me, and it was tight to press without doing the damage boost, then we have the climbing koopas and the sparky, yet another that didn't line up for me, and the pipe before the midpoint was just evil, good thing it didn't kill me, otherwise oh boi, the second half was better, but in the end, beating this level was more of a relief than an accomplishment
Level 11, Combustion Calamity, the gimmick is fire bros and flame dooms, level was good, the obstacles were good, not much to say, it was fun
Level 12, HARD WATER, guess the gimmick, yes, swimming, and in addition, some sprites are faster and you swim like if you were carrying a sprite, despite the footage, i believe this was an easy stage but my controller just didn't register the "Down Right" direction few times, but this was challenging nonetheless, the final boss is a reminiscence to the fruit dealer from WorldPeace's hack "Cool or Cruel", a neat conclusion to a hack
Music:
Ports were varied and "bombastic", complimenting the hack good, minus the hooded edge port XD
Graphics:
Most of the hack uses the vanilla tileset with the ocassional SMB3 backgrounds
Conclusion:
I enjoyed this one, even if the "Trial and Error" elements are there, most of the levels were really good and stand up for the 2 or 3 stinkers in the hack
8/10
