Super ASPE Mario (Japanese Smw Hack) - Part 1
Part 1 - Grassy Sweet Coast
It's been a while since i first played this hack, 5 years in fact, and 4 years later some folks at SMWC/Talkhaus translated and made this hack playable on Snes9x but never got to it properly because i wasn't in the mood to play it again. A few weeks ago i saw raocow playing this and ranting at some stages, that's when i finally decided to replay this hack because i remembered it being good. so let's see if this hack holds up or if i just misremembered things
This hack was made with users on Twitter apparently, having a few known names of the japanese scene, not sure how true is this
So, World 1. This one features grass, a mountain level, a library, a sky, a train, a sweetland level, an upside down castle, as well as 2 optional levels featuring water, hurrey
W1-1 - Lakeside Trail:
Your standard initial level, this one is a solid level, messing with water and enemies, good one
W1-2 - Ghost Valley:
Mountain/Cemetery/Haunted level, this one is a difficulty spike if i say so myself, for one, there's grinders, boos, boo rings and a fishing boo. Grinders and boos are fine for the most part, but some grinders are perfectly placed to mess you up in your jumps, boos that are fine, i don't mind these at all aside for the rings that make you wait, the fishing boo however is the one that could drain your 10 lives easily as it's very close to the ground, and if it's not the fishing boo then it's the bats and piranha plants, so yeah, difficulty spike here
W1-3 - The Library Mansion
The fist ghost house themed level and a pretty unique one too, centered around reading books that change the state of Mario based on RNG, this includes Mushrooms, points, sliperyness, stars, p-switch, etc. The main grip i have with this level is the secret exit, because of the RNG based mechanic, the secret exit can be a hassle to get, you need to get the pink effect and also be close to the secret exit to get it. Other than that, neat stage
W1-A - Sugary Hoppity-Hop
Candy themed level, this one is fun to play, i specially like the "Bouncing" blocks affecting sprites too, this level also has shattered blocks that are well used
W1-B - Akariiin!
This is another standard grassy level, centered around the 4 different colored switch palace blocks. The level also is colored in Pink, nothing else to say, another good level
W1-4 - This Stage
The first autoscroller of the hack, at least this one is interesting, and quite simplistic too, making use of the horizontal wrap and the tiles of the FG2 slot only, i like it, it may be another highlight for this world personally
W1-5 - The Express
The second autoscroller, two in a row. This one is centered around a train like feel, but i don't really think it feels like that, it needs a proper BG to feel like a proper train station or something. Not to mention it uses "Redrawn" graphics, and I'm not a fan of those. The level also has castle enemies and makes good use of them so it's not that bad, it's just ok
W1-C - The MM Sea
Water level stage, and a MegaMan one of all things, the physics can get you by surprise but it's tolerable. Some jumps and enemies makes the stage more tight and precise, it can be a pain but it's fine
W1-Fortress - Submerged Castle
Another water level, this one is a strange level, for one, it has a lot of slowdown, second, the level is odlly constructed, having some places with holes instead of having these filled but oh well, third, some enemies are placed with the intention of screw you. and lastly, the timer is somewhat tight, so you better go fast or take it slowly to barlely make it to the end, it's ok
W1-Castle - Topsy Turby Castle
The first castle with a switch palace hidden in it. The gimmick here is the upside down second half of the stage, reversing everything and make you go back to the beginning, neat idea and good executed. The boss is kind of annoying not gonna lie, but overall good stage
and with that we can go to the second world
