And here we are, this is the end of the line, we started with a good entry, can we close with one? one way to find out
Gameplay:
We take control of Mario and oiraM err... Dark Mario for this adventure, in the overworld you can swap between the two with L or R, you may notice a big blue/ice thingie in the middle of the map, that's a mirror, the hack is divided in 2 worlds with 3 levels each, the spicy twist? Both worlds are different, whereas one world has water, the other has lava, while one is all colorful and vibrant, the other world is dark and desolate, to spice things even more, there are items in the levels that affect one of the two worlds. For example, in the Light world you need an object that is in the Dark World, you need to play as Dark Mario and get the item so regular Mario can have it and progress, it's a game of helping each other. Now, 6 levels doesn't sound like much right? well yeah, but these levels are lengthy and depending on the items you collect they can expand a bit more, not to mention some are challenging. And for the minor negative things i have some things, levels are big, and in some occasions i jumped straight to some off-screen enemies, and there are few blind jumps here and there, the other thing is the placement of a few tiles, more specifically in the Rocket boots power up, and in Tower of Ligh, in the first, level, the gas re fillers are a bit too close for my liking, and they can be a bit confusing since some are too close. and the second has to do with thwomps, in the climbing section there are a lot of these, they are easy to navigate, however, since you need to spin jump in some to get height and land, you can be caught by surprise by off-screen thwomps, but yet again those are pretty minor things, and an extra, the ending was... anticlimactic, the two bosses were easy and the ending was just a bit dissapointing, granted it had a resolution but i was expecting at least some credits or something, not an empty room with a toad and a box
Music:
The music of the hack is completely ported for this hack, i asked some members of the team if they used music from the music section and they confirmed that they didn't, so yeah, everything was ported for this specific entry. The selection was from "Seiken Densetsu 3" or also known as "Trials of Mana" over here. I'm a fan of the SD3 music so this was a pleasant surprise to hear. And for the few individuals who don't know what SD3/Trials of Mana is, it's the music heard in Brutal Mario
Graphics:
Almost the entire hack sticks with the Vanilla tileset, having the small town with custom buildings, and the cemetery as exceptions, and the Overworld graphics as well
Conclusion:
This was a good way to close the lineup of videos, short hack, challenging, with good music selection (Although I'm being biased here) i say we ended in a good note, not a high one but a good one, i liked the gimmick of the mirror and the items afecting both sides of the story
8/10
