That Time I Switched From the Super Nintendo to Sega Genesis!
I will admit that, over the years, I've had my flag planted pretty firmly in the Nintendo Fanboy Camp. Sure, we had an Atari 2600, or whatever clone knockoff Sears offered, but it wasn't until the Nintendo Entertainment System that I truly fell in love with video games. My friend Kyle showed me a completely different video game system when I was in 4th grade from this company called Sega, that being the Sega Master System. I saw it as a knockoff of the NES and didn't pay it much mind, and others in the USA clearly did the same. But things changed with the 16-bit era kicked off and Sega changed the game with the Sega Genesis. Double the bits, double the processing, double the fun, right? Well I was such a staunch Nintendo Fan I couldn't see the Genesis for the excellent system it was. I even waited, bypassing the Genesis for a Super Nintendo. But then I saw something that changed things for me and I had to play it, and that was Sonic the Hedgehog.
Sonic had attitude, he was fast, there was blast processing, it was everything the SNES was and more! Or at least that's what the marketing said, and being a stupid teenager, I believed it. Finally, right after one Christmas, I saved up the money to head to the local Kohl's store to get my Genesis 2 with the Sonic 2 pack in. I was so excited, and so quickly the feeling faded. Sure, I played and loved Sonic 2, and I eventually played Sonic 1 as well. Still, I didn't know as much about Sega as I did Nintendo, as I was a reader of Nintendo Power and I didn't know about things like Electronics Gaming Monthly. Quickly I felt like I had gotten all I was going to get out of the Genesis, at least at the time.
While I have gone back and curated a nice Genesis collection now, I couldn't get into what the Genesis was back then. It was okay. I enjoyed the Sonic Games, but it just wasn't, well, it wasn't Nintendo. The SNES just did something for me that the Genesis couldn't match.
Have you ever switched video gaming allegiances over the years? From PlayStation to Xbox, or Xbox to Playstation? Let me know in the comments!
