I Can't Believe Nintendo Finally Did THIS With The Switch In the USA!!
It took quite a while, but Nintendo accomplished something remarkable with the Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED line of consoles. See, Nintendo already owned the title of the best-selling video game system of all time with the Nintendo DS, a fantastic device. But Sony, from whom Nintendo took the crown, was hanging tight in the number 2 spot with the PlayStation 2. Well, move over PS2 because there's a new second-place system, and it also belongs to Nintendo!
I can't believe it took Nintendo so long to finally do this with the Nintendo Switch, but it is now official that the Nintendo Switch is the 2nd best-selling system of all time, at least in the USA. According to Circana (Formerly NPD, when did this change?!) Nintendo has sold 46.6 million units in the USA to topple their rival for second place. The global numbers are a bit different, however, as the Switch has sold 146.04 million units globally, while the PlayStation 2 has sold 160-million to make it the top selling console of all-time globally. The DS sits in second place globally with 154.07 million lifetime sales, or about 7 to 8 million more units than the Switch.
What can I attribute this success to? Well, the Switch is a fantastic piece of hardware, regardless of which version we're talking about. It provides a fun gaming experience on the go or connected to a TV that is currently unmatched. It also features some of the best IP from Mario to Zelda, Kirby, Samus, and others which makes it a compelling purchase.
Another thing Nintendo has done better than others is making owning multiple versions of the same system make sense. In my own house we have 2 Switch Lites, 2 Switch OLEDs, and a launch day Switch. Why? Handheld and inexpensive gaming for my wife and youngest, I wanted the Switch and Switch OLED at launch, and I also wanted the Mario Edition Switch Oled when it launched. So, yeah, we're part of that sales data!
Even with the Switch 2 Rumors of a Switch Successor coming, the original is still a sales monster. Do you think that the Nintendo Switch will surpass the PS2 globally? Share your thoughts in the comments!
