Heavily based on the Perm mythology from Perm, Russia, this gameplay of The Mooseman wastes no time dropping me into a fantasy world of mystery and magic. Though a 2.5D side-scroller game, the amazing art style and intriguing story sparked my interest. No doubt focusing on exploration, let's begin our journey through the wilderness.

I play as a shadowy figure who steps away from his traveling group to set out on a journey of discovery. It's not long before I learn the controls that allow me to switch between the Middle World and the Lower World. While in the Lower World, I don a moose skull that rests upon my head. With this power, I'm able to view a world hidden from the naked eye. A ghostly, X-ray ability that allows me to see trees that may have once stood, ancient markings and glyphs, and even dead people. The dead hide in the trees and behind rocks, as if watching my every step forward.

Each totem that I pass unlocks more of the myths and story of the game. One of the first myths speaks of the Sir-Yu River, a river the separates the Middle World from the Lower World. Vakul guards the two worlds from within the river, threatening to eat anything that dares try to cross. Only unique individuals known as Todys possess the ability to cross between the worlds unscathed. Am I a Tody?

A giant bear named Osh, guarder of the underworld, sleeps in the woods. By flipping to the Lower World, perhaps I can view its inner workings to see what triggers the bear. By successfully escaping, unlock the achievement for Claws of Osh.

In addition to myths, hidden artifacts appear as rainbow colored objects when spotted. Collecting them reveals more about the markings and glyphs of Perm, including the anthropomorphic figure of the Mooseman itself. Learn about a god named Yen, who nourished with Middle World with trees and fish while sending evil souls to the lower world with Osh.

Flipping to the Lower World also triggers the ability to move some objects possessed by some spirit, such as a large boulder or a wooden log to help cross an area, or to protect me from danger.

All of the spirits are named Chud, created by the god Yen. Some may be helpful and assist me on my journey. Otherwise may be evil and bring misfortune. The latter becomes true as I travel across the Sir-Yu swamp tar pits and the walking dead. In the mythology, when we die, our soul known as Ort travels along the Last Road, passing through three worlds to reach an iron mountain.
