The only solution for Coatings and why 343 will NEVER fix them + Halo Infinite is chasing trends
Coloration, along with materials and patterns, will now be baked into the Coating, taking the place of the primary/secondary armor color options found in prior games. Ok, let’s calm down, and talk about what’s happening with Halo Infinite. The only real solution for Coatings and why 343 will NEVER fix them.
Halo Infinite Coatings are purchasable Skins, each Coating will have a different material, and this means that all Skins will be Presets and there will not be any individuality to each Spartan armor’s color as before. We already knew that Halo Infinite would have had microtransactions, and the fact that multiplayer will be Free to play confirmed that, but what many people fear, is that: if they arrived to the point of monetizing colors, does this mean monetization will be very intrusive? Apparently yes, I have some evidence:

Coatings will come in place of the old modular color system, so they will need to make a huge amount of skins to allow each player to recreate their usual color selection, this will probably mean a lot of filler Coatings that will not satisfy our needs.
This is my solution: Halo Infinite will be playable in three different ways:
• For free: if you only want to play multiplayer and you don’t have GamePass
• Full price: which I believe will be 60$, giving you access to Campaign and all the features
• And last through Game Pass: accessing all the features as well
For now, we’ll leave Game Pass aside.
The solution for Coatings is: for Free to play users 343 can monetize that audience. Instead, this is the system they should build for users that will buy the game full price:
• 1 Create the modular primary and secondary color selection just like before
• 2 Instead of monetizing Coatings for buyers, 343 could monetize just the materials.
This solution would benefit both us and 343 Industries, and I think it’s the only way to solve this issue. As for Game Pass users, if it was my call to choose how to monetize Coatings, I would use the same system that is used for Free to Play users.
In every Halo game made by 343, when they innovated and created something new, some features that were well liked by the community did not return, and those new innovative features were added in. Since it’s been 8 years we’ve been giving feedback to 343, by now they should have understood that many Halo fans are emotionally attached to every single feature of the previous games, no matter how minor it was. They may haven't got this point for Halo 4 and 5, but I’m pretty sure they know at this stage. So, why are they really doing this?
Now, let’s talk about why 343 Halo games were never as influential as Bungie’s. Sure, there is who likes 343 games, this is undeniable! But if you didn’t notice yet, 343 likes to chase popular trends. Halo 4 copied Call of Duty in many ways – Halo 5 copied Titanfall and Call of Duty with advanced movement – and Halo Infinite is going free to play in its multiplayer and probably monetizing cosmetics in a heavy manner just like Fortnite.
343 is scared to commit to the principles that made Halo popular, and instead of evolving it like it evolved in the original trilogy, they try to capitalize on what’s popular in the gaming industry.
So, “Why 343 will never fix Coatings” with the solution I provided in this video? As we discussed, 343 received backlash each game they made, so, I think they might feel like “they can’t innovate” because of the classic fans.
Halo Infinite’s multiplayer will be Free to Play so that 343 can replace most of Halo’s fanbase with a new audience, and since that will be the case, they don’t need to fix this Coating issue, because their new fanbase will play it for free and will not complain about this predatory practices.
If you are a classic Halo fan like me what’s left for us? 343 luckily made most of Halo Infinite’s art style like the classic games, the music sounds great and maybe the story will be good. I’m really sorry, but if you only care for the multiplayer I don’t think you’ll see a new classic Halo game. But if you like Bungie’s campaigns as much as me, there is still hope for something incredible. All we can do is express our concern to the community manager, and hope for the best.
