Trek To Yomi was one of my favourite indie games of 2021, and the main inspiration behind this channel in the first place. It just seemed like the kind of game that you could make a fantastic video out of with very little effort.

This gameplay section is about 20-30 mins into the game. I chose it because it provides a nice summary of the game’s combat and ‘exploration’, while also having some amazing cinematic moments and being bookended by two great cutscenes. And in case you’re wondering… yes, the combat does get more varied later on due to the introduction of new enemy types.

I tried my best to show off all the combat moves and make each fight look as cool as possible, but every now and then you’ll see me mistime a parry and look like a complete idiot as a result (not to mention that one bit where I ran into a wall when trying to walk through a doorway). Hey, nobody’s perfect!

The story context is that our hero, Hiroki, was leading a band of samurai to help a nearby village that was under attack from bandits. When they reached the forest they were attacked by enemies that seemed to appear out of thin air. Hiroki fought them off, but all of his comrades were taken prisoner. The opening cutscene of this video shows him tracking his comrades to the village, before attempting to rescue them on his own. Will he succeed? Watch and find out!

PS: The glowing shrines in this game are save points that refill your health and stamina. I didn’t use them so that I could respawn at a specific save point and do multiple takes of this video.
