[TRIP REPORT] Hokkaido Shinkansen Hayabusa Super Express From Hakodate To Tokyo In Green Car
Hokkaido to Tokyo by Shinkansen train seems like the obvious choice, but the distance is much more than from Tokyo to Kyoto and the travel time between Hakodate and Tokyo will take just over 4 hours to complete with the fastest Shinkansen. In this trip report we will have a look at how it is to travel on the Hokkaido and Tohoku Shinkansen with the Hayabusa Super Express in Green Car.
The Shinkansen train will use the 53,85 kilometer long Seikan Tunnel to reach the main island Honshu from Hoikkaido. This tunnel is the longest undersea tunnel and the second longest tunnel in the world. The Channel Tunnel connecting France and The United Kingdom has a longer undersea section, but a shorter total tunnel lenght.
The Hayabusa Super Express has Granclass, Green Car and Ordinary Class. The Japan Railpass covers this train fully, except if you want to travel on the Granclass. As JR train fares are based on distance, this route is particular value for money with the JR Railpass, even with the heavily increased price happened back in October 2023. Taking a flight however may be cheaper though if you don't intend to use the Japan Railpass.
