[TRIP REPORT] Limited Express Yakumo From Okayama To Izumo In Green Car By JR West 381 Series
The Limited Express Yakumo is very loved among railway enthousiasts in Japan. Many try to catch a ride on it or photograph it along the Habuki Line in its final years of operation. The reason for all of this is the train type used for this service, the iconic 381 Series train in the old JNR Japan National Railway livery.
The 381 Series was once very common on mountainous routes throughout Japan. These tilting trains could reach higher speeds on the railway lines with many curves. In 2024 their career in regular passenger service will reach an end after more than 50 years of service. From March 2024 they will be gradually replaced by the new 273 Series trains with the final one retiring in June 2024.
You can find these 381 Series trains on the Limited Exress Yakumo operated by JR West between Okayama and Izumoshi. The train will make stops at Okayama, Kurashiki, Niimi, Yonago, Matsue and Izumoshi. All of them are painted in a different special retro livery representing a different era of their service years. Be sure to catch them before it is too late!
