[TRIP REPORT] Limited Express Lilac From Asahikawa To Sapporo In Green Car By JR Hokkaido
The Limited Express Lilac together with the Limited Express Kamui forms the backbone of JR Hokkaido's Hakodate Main Line from Sapporo to Asahikawa. The two major cities of Hokkaido are connected by frequent and fast trains with each other. There is a departure every 30 minutes during most parts of the day and every 60 minutes at other times making it one of the most frequent Limited Express trains in Japan.
The main difference between Lilac and Kamui is that the Lilac consist of a 6 car train, one of which is the Green Car. While Kamui consist of a 5 car train where one is a U Seat Car, Ordinary Class with mandatory reservation. Both are 789 Series trains which one operates the Limited Express Hakucho between Hakodato and Aomori before the introduction of the Hokkaido Shinkansen.
The Limited Express Lilac and Kamui route is as follow: Asahikawa - Fukagawa - Takigawa - Sunagawa - Bibai - Iwamizawa - Sapporo. The travel time between Asahikawa and Sapporo is 01h25m for the full lenght. In addition to Lilac and Kamui, passengers may also opt to travel with the Limited Express Okhotsk coming from Abashiri and Soya originating from Wakkanai.
