[TRIP REPORT] Jōetsu Shinkansen With The Toki Super Express From Tokyo To Niigata In Green Car
The Jōetsu Shinkansen runs from Tokyo to Niigata and opened on the 15th November 1982. The hispeed railway line cuts through the Echigo Mountains and give acces to several winter resort towns and also to various cities in the Niigata prefecture. Most of the line is builed in tunnels, but you can still see some nice mountain views along the way.
The Shinkansen E7 series operates on this line and are identical to the W7 series found on the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo to Tsuruga. These trains are in my opinion the most beautiful Shinkansen trains Japan has on offer. This trip report focus more on the train type than on the journey as it is actually quite a short one.
The Toki is a limited stop service from Tokyo to Niigata while the Tanigawa acts as a stopping service between Tokyo and Echigo-Yuzawa or Gala Yuzawa. Gala Yuzawa is only open during the winter period providing a fast train link to ski resorts. The Toki 311 and 312 are the only ones making just one stop at Ōmiya while other Toki trains will make more stops along the route.
