Ubuntu 13.04 VS Windows 8: Dota 2 Comparison with a GTX 680
266Video showcasing the frames per-second difference of running Dota 2 on Ubuntu versus running it in Windows 8. Both tests have Dota 2 running maxed out.
Both systems are using the latest Nvidia drivers. Ubuntu has 331.13, and Windows has the 331.40.
Dota 2 settings were exactly the same in both operating systems.
No screen recorders were involved. All recording was done with the Nikon AW100 camera ( thus the low quality video, best I can do at this point in time ).
The purpose of this test is to see where the game drops fps in both systems, and how badly or how well each system handles the fps drop. Do take note, that on Ubuntu's side Dota 2 is still making Direct3D calls but it is being translated to OpenGL. This means there is slightly more overhead, so by default Ubuntu or any Linux distro should be at a disadvantage compared to running the game on Windows. This test aims to see how much of a disadvantage that may be.
Summary: Ubuntu 13.04 runs very closely on par with Windows 8, but does see fps loss of 10-20fps more at any given moment of intense action.
This video is just to highlight the performance I get in both Operating Systems. They are NOT representative of what anyone else may experience, whether current, past or future. AMD graphics users and Intel graphics users may experience vastly different results. [Although I should have an Intel HD 4600 test up soon]
I am not infallible. It is likely that I made mistakes. I did however put a lot of time into this to try and get it right. I hope you can take something informational out of this.
