Video showcasing the frames per-second difference of running Left 4 Dead 2 on Ubuntu versus running it in Windows 8. I also include a bonus test where I run Ubuntu with LXDE and see how that compares to Windows 8 and Ubuntu Unity.

On the Ubuntu side of things, I used the newest Linux driver which is 319.49.

On the Windows side of things, I used the newest Windows driver which is 327.23.

Left 4 Dead 2 was set to exactly the same settings in both situations.

Changes I made this time around compared to the first L4D2 comparison video I made are:
1. Used Source Engine's Demo ability to keep the timing the same.
2. NO SCREEN RECORDERS. Just the game, the OS and the graphics driver.
3. Audacity was used to record the game audio.
4. L4D2 add-ons were disabled.
5. Ubuntu driver updated to latest to try and match the Windows latest driver (this is still rather unfair though since Windows has a newer version, whilst Linux driver is lagging behind).

As requested by many, I made the above changes. My previous video is still valid in my eyes, as I was intentionally testing the game under both OSs with screen capture on to see which OS would handle the load better.

This time around, without the screen recorder, both Operating systems run nearly the same. The only place there is a significant difference is with the fire under the stairs. For some reason Windows gets 50fps more there whilst Ubuntu loses 50fps. It might be a bug in the game or in the Linux driver, or simply Ubuntu unable to handle it.

Summary: Ubuntu 13.04 with Unity runs on par with Windows 8. However, if you're looking to squeeze some more fps out of Ubuntu, try running it with LXDE. LXDE was able to handle the zombie attack scenes better than Ubuntu Unity and Windows 8.

This video is just to highlight the performance I get in both Operating Systems. They are NOT representative of what anyone else may experience, whether current, past or future. AMD graphics users and Intel users may experience vastly different results.

I am not infallible. It is likely that I made mistakes. I did however put a lot of time into this to try and get it right. I hope you can take something informational out of this.
