Ultima IX - Tidbits #9: Anybody for a "no spell, no backpack" challenge?
0Getting in the ring in Buccaneer's Den temporarily removes your items, backpack, spell book and wielded items, but not the worn equipment, nor what you place on the ground.
Being able to pick up a weapon and finish the theoretically "fist only" challenge with it is the smaller thing, less than a tidbit...
...but realizing that you can just move on in this state and the game lets you progress is something much bigger.
Before recording this small video, I checked around and nothing seemed to react to this state. Samhayne, the keelhaul cave, Kathrina, etc. even I got to Hythloth.
With this you theoretically can play till meeting something that mandatorily requires a spell (remember, you can use certain water bucket for dousing and probably can bypass some other spell requirements, too) or till you need more than 12 inventory space. The flying cheat can bypass some things, but it's fun only when you map game mechanics, not for actual cheating.
Knowing that you eventually can return to Buccaneer's Den and get your things, it would be interesting to see how far one gets without flying cheat or with just a very mild usage of it.
It's also a question how this state interact with other backpack take/restore events, like when Raven returns your things.
Also, if you wonder why I keep uploading raw videos now with long descriptions instead of video captions... Well, it's so much faster and I have so few time for full-attention things like video editing.
I was toying with the idea of making this and the next video as they should be, with Sony Vegas, since both are more than small tidbits, but... time.
