I made this video to show that the optional/cutoff area of Hythloth is completely doable without cheats or serious equipment/inventory.

Despite the practice runs and research, it could have been faster and less clumsy at times. I also got lost one time and was hesitating at another. Still, the goal was achieved.
There are some videos of this area, but I haven't found a completely clean one without flying cheat and with everything done in order, like it was a regular mandatory area, so I thought I try an "as intended" completion and if it succeeds, I upload it.

What hinders completion for new players is the light switch puzzle and also probably the first upper well (when the corridor gets filled with water), these surely require a guide (or this video) to get right. It's especially so if you have a low-end setup or are playing in the early 2000's, since then the white and the red light difference might not be visible enough and the corridors are too dark to notice any opening in the ceiling.

Even with knowledge of the route, the hardest parts for me were the water filled areas, especially the one from the three-spider L room to the jug-covered statue. Of course a blue potion solves that completely, but I wanted to show you that it's possible this way, plus I wanted a challenge for me. Besides, the danger of drowning, being underwater, far from air, the agony of the wind having been replaced with all wet currents is a wonderful dark delight. Speaking of dark, the flame sword, and later also the light spell are kinda a must.

Fun:
The transculent platform on that one of the statues stand is the biggest glitch-wearable object I have found so far (put a held weapon into your inventory, pull the platform onto your backpack icon and there you are), it even obstructs view and makes grabbing objects harder. It's not transparent while being "worn".
I didn't show it mostly to keep the video glitch free, even of cosmetic glitches.
