Turns out you can save the man beaten by the pirate not only by killing the agressor. If you lure the pirate a bit away, the game already thinks that he is finished. Most probably it looks only at the immediate surroundings of the victim.

However, if you interact with the pirate again, the same conversation plays (which also dependson if the shrine has been cleansed yet or not). Also, if you lure the pirate too far away (like to the central docks) speaking with him crashes the game.
