Ultima IX - Tidbits #13: Hythloth unused area in first map
Using the flying cheat to peek behind walls is already interesting and now I show a specific point which, upon accessed by flying instead of walking, can be accessed. Normally, if you walk there, the second map of Hythloth loads.
I spent as few time flying while already being there as possible, to see if any other hidden map loads from there, but sadly it's not the case.
Still, the size of the area and the presence of at least one interactable object combined with the fact that I discovered it only yesterday is enough for a tidbit.
If you explore for yourself, you can see many inaccessible pipes/tunnels and also for example a non-obtainable key object outside the walls.
This all is probably because this dungeon was affected by the redesigns much more than most.
In previous titles the Britain sewers and Hythloth were two different areas. Here in Ascension the beginning of Hythloth is a standard sewer, because it would have been the Britain sewers, then later when they decided to cut content and make this sewer be the 2nd dungeon, Hythloth, the rest became more puzzle-ish and they also stacked a column with glyph there at a kinda random location. (No wonder I wasn't finding the glyph easily when I played the first time 20 years ago.)
Also, in the previous Ultimas Hythloth is a dangerous high level area, maybe they planned this one to be a later dungeon, that's why it's so big and puzzle-ish even without the optional area, shaming even some later dungeons. Shame.
