About this video: This video is a complete unboxing and reviewing of the Western Digital My Passport. This a great, super portable external hard drive. We are going to be taking a look at the Black 2TB My Passport from Western Digital. In the video, I also do a complete unboxing, benchmarks, and in-depth review. Thus, if you are looking to buy a Western Digital My Passport, this video will give you all of the information you need! Let's get on into it!
First off, one of my favorite parts about this hard drive is the fact that the only cable you need for it to work is a single USB cable. That alone makes it one of my favorite external HDDs I have ever had. All of the other external hard drives I have need a power cord as well making them super inconvenient to travel with, use in coffee shops, and even to just transfer them from one PC to another in the office. The My Passport doesn't have this option.
What about speed though? Well, as many of you know, I like data, and because of that, I wanted to use a benchmarking tool to make sure I got the most accurate results possible. So, we are going to be using CrystalDiskMark to benchmark this HDD. First, though, we need a comparison point.
So, I went ahead and ran my Western Digital Caviar Blue 7,200 RPM drive on CrystalDiskMark. Speeds were okay, but we saw a huge drop on the second, third, and fourth runs. This will be our baseline. Moving over to the 2TB My Passport, it actually performed really well over USB 3.0 being only about 15MB/second behind on both read and write speeds on the first run. It also showed a lot more consistency on the second, third, and fourth runs. Overall, this stacks up very well against a 7,200 RPM SATA drive.
Now. let's move on to design. I decided to go with the black My Passport, and it is super sleek with a matte, bumpy finish on bottom and a smooth glossy finish on top. It also feels super high-quality. The plastics are super high-quality, and they fit together perfectly.
This high-quality feel and its sleek design make it fit in perfectly everywhere from a gaming setup at home to a coffee shop to even a super-formal office. Nobody is going to think twice about you having this thing out on your desk. If anything, they'll compliment how good it looks!
So we've talked about ease of use, speed, design, but is this thing worth the money? Well, the 2TB version that I have currently costs $64.99 on Amazon. This is the same price as the Seagate option, and actually cheaper than what Fantom has to offer. If you pair that with the fact that Western Digital is an extremely trusted brand when it comes to hard drives and the 3-year limited warranty they offer, I think the My Passport is well worth the money if you are looking for an external hard drive.
Now, what would I rate things thing overall? Well, I am going to give the 2TB Western Digital My Passport a 4.5 out of 5. Why not a full 5 out of 5? Well, at the end of the day, if you decide to change from the black option you will have to pay a bit more, and if you are looking for just a 1TB external HDD, there are better budget options out there. Overall though, this is, in my opinion, the best external hard drive option out there if you want quality, ease of use, and a great look all in a small form factor.
