380Is building a Hackintosh worth it in 2018? Well, that is exactly what I talk about in this video. We built a Hackintosh, and in this video, I give you my thoughts on the process, how difficult it is to build a Hackintosh, and if the Apple Tax is still real. To do this, we spec out an iMac Pro all the way and build an equivalent Hackintosh to see which one comes out cheaper. The answer may surprise you!

About this video: In this video, I talk about whether or not it is worth it to build a Hackintosh in 2018. We recently bought a used Hackintosh, and because of that, we have a first-hand experience with building a Hackintosh and whether or not it is worth doing so in 2018! So, let's go ahead and get on into it!
One of the biggest things about building a Hackintosh is that so many people say it is so difficult to do. Well, I'm here to tell you that as long as you pick Hackintosh compatible hardware, the process of installing MacOS, drivers, etc. will be extremely easy. And, as long as you pick popular hardware, there will tons of people out there to help you if you do have an issue.
So, installing MacOS isn't that difficult, but what about the price? Is there really still an 'Apple Tax'? Well, we built a used Hackintosh system that was equivalent to a 2015 5K iMac, and the final price came out to be $400 for our used system when a USED 2015 5K iMac with worse specs would cost you $1,500. So, we were able to save $1,100 when building a Hackintosh with used parts versus buying a used iMac. Not a bad savings if you ask me, but what about if you're not buying used.
Well, I thought the best way to do this would be to put together the parts for a Hackintosh iMac Pro. Do this though, we need to spec out an iMac Pro to get our baseline. In doing that, you upgrade to a 2.3GHz 18-core Intel Xeon W CPU, 128GB of DDR4-2666MHz ECC memory with 4TB of SSD storage, and an AMD Radeon Pro Vega 64 GPU that features 16GB of HMB2 memory. WOW! The total comes out to a staggering $13,199.00 on Apple.com.
With that, we had to build a comparable system ourselves, and this isn't a build guide, so I'm not going to run through every part. However, every part is linked above in the description for you to check out. We went with the same Intel Xeon W CPU, 128GB of DDR4-2666MHz ECC memory, a 4TB SSD, and an AMD Radeon Vega 64 Frontier Edition with 16GB of HMB2 VRAM. I also added a 5K monitor to this price from Dell in order to get the same screen real estate as the iMac. The price for the Hackintosh with the monitor came out to $8,818.79. That is an over $4,300 savings if you build the Hackintosh.
If you ask me, that shows that the 'Apple Tax' is still very alive and very real. Building a Hackintosh can you save you serious money at every price point.
Overall though, is building a Hackintosh still worth it in 2018? Yes, I truly believe it is. Not only are you going to be saving money, but MacOS is super easy to install these days. Plus, if you run into any issues, the Hackintosh community is HUGE and always happy to help if you've got a problem. If you're looking to build a Hackintosh, do it! It'll be super fun, and you'll learn a ton! Plus, you get an incredible computer out of it!
