About this video: In this video, I go over exactly what a GPU does in a gaming PC and why it is so important. Let's get on into it!

So first, I think it is worth mentioning that every single computer on the planet, even your phone, has some kind of GPU in it assuming that it produces an image. Even if it a PC doesn't have a dedicated graphics card, it has some sort of graphical processing unit it, which is what GPU stands for by the way. This is because GPUs take and video from your computer's processor and convert it to a digital signal to your monitor. Sometimes this is done through a dedicated graphics card like one from AMD or Nvidia, but it can also be done by an integrated GPU on the processor like on APUs from AMD and Intel HD graphics on Intel chips.

Now, for a gaming PC, you are going to want a dedicated graphics card 99% of the time. Sure AMD's APUs are pretty good at entry level gaming, but even still, you're going to get much better gaming performance if you go with a dedicated graphics. These dedicated graphics cards are typically plugged into your PCI slot on your motherboard, and they have their own IO sticking out of your computer case as you will need to plug your monitor directly into the GPU.

But getting that image on your monitor quickly and without much of any delay at all is a very mathematically intensive task. Every single frame in a game takes millions of calculations to display. This why gaming on a CPU's onboard graphics usually don't give you a good result. The CPU is already taking care of other things and graphics processing just bogs it down even more.

When you have a dedicated graphics card, however, it will take care of all of these calculations and let your CPU work on other things. A GPU is a microprocessor that is specifically designed for taking care of video. The graphics card lets the processor take care of everything else while it worries about what you are seeing in a game.

With that being said, where does VRAM play into all of this? Well, VRAM is the GPUs own memory. VRAM literally stands for Video RAM. Just like plain old normal RAM it temporarily holds data. The only difference is that it temporarily holds video data that the graphics card makes for each frame you see. Because GPUs have their own RAM, they don't need to use the RAM on the main machine. Leaving all of that to your processor. VRAM helps improve your experience in games because it processes hundreds of millions of bytes of video every second leaving all of that work off of your CPU and normal RAM.

Overall, a GPU is basically another computer inside and apart of your main computer. Instead of worry about keeping Google Chrome running though, it is focused on making you see it, and in games, it is in charge of making those incredible graphics look absolutely stunning without any ghosting, shuttering, or frame skipping.

Nevertheless, I hope you all enjoyed this video. If you did, please give it a thumbs up, subscribe to the channel, and share it with your friends if you haven't already. It really means the world to us! Thank you very much in advance!
