About this video: In this video, I show you exactly how to choose the RAM for your gaming PC. RAM is an extremely important part of a gaming PC, but what does it do, how much do you need of it, and what kind should you go with? Well, we're going to cover all of that and more.
So first off, what does RAM even do in a gaming PC? Well, RAM provides quick read and write access to data that your computer needs. Loading data from RAM is much quicker than getting that same data directly off of a hard drive. All of the data that you are using on your computer right now is stored in RAM. Without RAM everything would be stored on a hard drive and take a VERY long time to access. This type of memory provides much faster read/write times than using a hard drive.
So how does this relate to gaming? Well, when you're gaming, you aren't using a lot of RAM. Most modern games don't use more than 4GB of RAM, and many use a lot less than that. What is really eating up your RAM when your gaming is the other stuff you have open. It's Spotify in the background, Discord, or the Chrome tabs that you are using to look-up how to do things in game.
So for a gaming system, you only need about 8GB of RAM. With that being said though, I would recommend getting 16GB of RAM if you can swing it to give yourself more longevity and more options for multitasking in the future. However, 8GB will get the job done for gaming, but that isn't the only thing you need to consider when you're looking to buy RAM for your gaming PC.
What about DDR4 versus DDR3. Well, DDR3 RAM is older and because of that, it will be slower performaning, and new hardware like the newest Intel and Ryzen CPUs and motherboards do not support it. In regards to gaming, this isn't going to matter much, so here is what I recommend. If you are building a new system, go DDR4. You'll basically have to. If you're upgrading an older system, keep DDR3. It's not going to make that big of a deal while you are going as long as you have 8GB or more of the stuff.
Now, you know how much RAM you need, what type you need to get, but how much does the speed of the RAM matter? Well, this could be an entire video in and of itself, but I'll give you the quick version. RAM comes at a bunch of different speeds, and it is measured in MHz. This usually follows DDR4. For example, a 16GB kit of DDR4-3000 RAM basically means that you are getting 16GB of DDR4 RAM with a speed of 3000Mhz.
Overall though, RAM speed doesn't matter as much as the jump from DDR3 to DDR4 does. So, overall, don't stress too much about this. As it stands currently, I would recommend 1600MHz RAM for DDR3 systems and 3000MHz RAM for a DDR4 system. The performance difference you will see in gaming though isn't going to be a very large one.
So, you should now know what you are looking for. If you're on a budget, that is probably going to be 8GB of DDR4-3000 RAM. If you search this up on Amazon using the link down below, you will see that there are tons of different brand of RAM. Everyone from Kingston to G.Skill to Crucial. There are tons of options. How to do you choose the right brand for your system?
Well, in regards to quality, just look at reviews. If it's 4 to 5 stars, you're going to be able to bet the quality is going to be competent. The same goes for RAM type and speed. That isn't really going to make much of difference between brands. Your biggest factors here are going to be price and design/style. Find RAM that you think will look good in your system and is listed at a good price. Just a note, typically going with the cheapest product or the most expensive product out there isn't a good idea. Something towards the middle usually will give you a nice look with good quality.
