About this video: When should you upgrade your gaming PC? Well, this video tells you exactly when you should upgrade every part your in your PC. From the graphics card and processor to the case and even power supplies. I talk about when you should upgrade every part of a gaming PC!
So generally when you are building a gaming PC for the long term, you want to go with 16GB of RAM. Assuming you are building a system right as this video is released, I would suggest 16GB of DDR4 or higher. 16GB of DDR3 should also be good if you are running an older system. This will be great for gaming, having some chrome tabs open, Discord, and music all at the same time.
Also, the case doesn't matter. As long as it has good airflow, you never really need to upgrade it as long as it fits a full ATX motherboard. The same goes for hard drives and power supplies. Unless you need more storage or more wattage, there is no reason to upgrade them.
So, that basically just leaves us with the CPU and GPU.
As far as the CPU goes, it is really surprising as to what little CPU power most games really need. For example, if you have an i3-8100 with the right graphics card, you can play 90% of modern games at max settings and all modern games at medium settings. Because of this, you aren't going to need to upgrade your CPU very often. If you buy a lower-end CPU, say under $200, you'll need to upgrade once every 4 or so years just to make sure things stay on the up and up. You could push it longer than that though most likely.
Higher-end CPUs can last much longer. For example, Intel Core i7 3770K's can still run modern games just fine because most modern games don't use more than one or two cores max. I would still suggest upgrading from this CPU though just because of other enhancements like DDR4 RAM, M.2 storage, etc., that you would gain.
Last note on upgrading your CPU. You will need to most likely upgrade your motherboard as well in order to use the new CPU. This is going to add to your costs, but again, will be worth it for most people if they are gaining DDR4 RAM, M.2 Storage, and overall faster processing speed.
Now, what about the GPU? Well, GPUs are going to need to be upgraded a lot more than CPUs because this is where most games find their home.
So when should you upgrade your GPU? Well, that really depends on what kind of settings you are looking for when it comes to games. If you want everything to be as high as possible on every game you play at full 4K resolution, well, you're going to need to upgrade your graphics every year and a half. However, if you're like most people and don't mind playing games at medium settings 1080P, then every 2.5 to 3 years should be good. As new games come out, your GPU will start to get worse and worse in comparison to modern standards. Thus, a 3-year upgrade cycle is about perfect.
Another general rule when it comes to graphics cards is that when you start to notice that you're having to play games at low settings, it's time to upgrade. For example, we started having issues with running new games, like COD WW2, at low settings on our 750Ti build. So, we upgraded that system's GPU, and now, it runs it like a dream. That system is running a core i5 4570 by the way.
So overall this is the upgrade schedule I would suggest.
Build a new system with a good CPU and GPU. Then, about 2 years sell your old GPU and buy another one. Thus, after about 4 more years, sell your CPU, GPU, and motherboard and upgrade all 3. This is also a good time to upgrade your RAM speed if you need. Add in more HDDs as you need to fill old ones up!
