What Is Complex PTSD? Understanding Symptoms & Patterns
Complex Trauma or Complex PTSD describes a set of symptoms that result from a compilation of traumatic experiences. It often involves a traumatic experience that is repeated, chronic, and unexpected which occurs at the hands of guardians, parents, or caregivers.
Although complex PTSD can occur in a variety of contexts, it is often noted in cases of child abuse and neglect. For example, a child who is being sexually abused by a parent may also experience repeated and unexpected sexual abuse throughout child development. On top of this trauma is other forms of trauma such as physical and emotional abuse.
In this video, I discuss complex trauma/PTSD and provide a practical explanation of symptoms. Stay tuned for my final video (coming up in another week) on how to cope and heal from complex PTSD and learned helplessness.
