This video is about the reason why Guts left Griffith and his Band of the Hawk in the 1997 Berserk anime. Even though Guts' decision to leave always made sense on an emotional level, it doesn't make a lot of sense when you look at it from the outside. He had become the greatest soldier in the greatest army in the land; he had attained the highest station that it was conceivable for him to attain, and he did so amongst friends and family. So what conflict in his heart must have driven him to leave Griffith's side? That's the question that I answer in this video.

I put my answer together by relying on two episodes (10 and 14). First I discuss Episode 14, in which Guts tells Casca a story about how his time with the Hawks has changed him, and how it has made him unsatisfied with the soldier's that has so far guided him with the Hawks. That is the reason why he must leave. Then I ask how this change happen, and how Guts became unsatisfied with his soldier's life. I find an answer by looking to Episode 10, and a pivotal moment where Guts overheard a speech that Griffith did not intend for his ears. The words that Guts heard changed his understanding of what it means to be a soldier by Griffith's side.
