REVIEW:
-Rocket Knight Adventures first appeared on the Megadrive in 93, followed by a sequel titled Sparkster in 94. The SNES game, although titled the same, is infact a completely original adventure with it's own unique style, a testament to what was so great about the retro age; original spinoffs on rival consoles!
Prior to its release, conversation of a Nintendo version would likely have ended with shouts of 'blast processing' from Sega camp, suggesting the high speed Jet Powered attacks accustomed to the series, would be more than the SNES could handle. Of course this isnt the case, the SNES handles the game speed wonderfully, only occasionally resorting to trademark slowdown when the screen is overloaded with moving sprites.
Minor technical issues aside, Sparkster is yet another standout addition to an already very well decorated suit of armour Konami created during this era. Similarities with Treasure games such as Gunstar Heroes & Dynamite Headdy seem unavoidable, with the level of detail that's been driven in every single pixel of animation such as was trademark of Konami's competition.
There's also a wealth of charm to every enemy & especially bosses; many of which utilise different backgrounds or scrolling perspectives to diversify the player experience.
The Gameplay also delights in early false assurances of ease, given your rocket attack appears so overpowered. However such naivety is quickly punished as; much like in Sonic, speed is often your enemy!
The diversity in level design is definitely a high point, demonstrating excellence in every area. I could pick a few holes with the shooter stage but given it's short length that wouldn't be fair. The boss however! Wow, that guy is fucking asshole end of discussion!
With a password given upon death, the decision to include limited continues is strange given that using either starts you at the beginning of the stage regardless, begging the question; why ever use a continue?
Great game with more to offer given that Hard Mode (much like Contra) unlocks yet another final boss fight. Personally I'm fine with Normal for now!
