REVIEW:
-Time for yet another brawler! I can't say I'm too disheartened, I really do love this genre despite its repetitive nature & coming off my last outing being the bat shit crazy, 'COFFEEEEEEE' shouting: UFO Kamen Yakisoban, it was refreshing to return to familiar surroundings beating down hoards of muscular street punks & martial art stereotypes.
Infact you could say the gameplay feels a little too familiar? Hold on, am I playing Final Fight? No, instead Jaleco cash in on the shortcomings of that snes port, by proudly brandishing the fact their brawler supports simultaneous 2 player co-op, eat that Capcom! Not satisfied there, they even went so far as to ensure you even play with the same characters as FF, with Jack Flak (😂) an obvious clone of Guy & Oozie Nelson (who looks like M.Bison doing fancy dress for a Village People party) is a clear copy of Hagger, complete with an array of powerful wrestling moves.
Tho supposedly handicapped by a slower walk speed, since the R button allows you to skate around the screen at top speed, there's really no reason to ever pick Mr Flak.
The similarities with Final Fight dont end with your characters either, with many enemies appearing to be cheap knockoffs too, take the obvious clone for Andore...Arnold!
So its alot like Final Fight, but to be honest most brawlers are a lot like Final Fight, it's pretty much what defines a brawler, question is, is it good? Well, I dont think it's a bad game if you're a die hard fan of the genre like me. It controls pretty slick, its definitely fast & theres a nice selection of enemies. Some of the gameplay is a little unfair at times but it's also quite easy to manipulate the AI so I guess that balances things.
You're granted 5 continues, 4 lives a piece. Tho given you lose about half your health each time your attacked, It still took me 3 playthroughs to finish.
There appears to be an 'Angry mode' option in the menu, presumably making enemies even harder? The programmers obviously dont know me well if they think I need an option to engage 'Angry Mode!'. Alas sticking with the rules of the challenge, this mode wasnt engaged as standard so I've beaten it without.
