-So once again a trip down memory lane means buckling in for yet another stressful encounter to beat a game I've already toppled on the Snes's older brother 3 years back. In truth, my conquest with its 8-bit counterpart (Nes Game #74) ended in confusion after although achieving the highest accolade, my game appeared to have a bug which stopped me from ever finishing a late on level? Meh, since the game had no end it didn't really matter much.
Though the Snes version was shackled with heavy criticism apon release for looking a generation behind visually, hindsight allows for a more rounded inspection and its clear the extra hardware improves the experience greatly. So what if it wasn't pushing boundaries at the time, is it fun to play now? Yes!
Dropzone appeared on just about every early system and its fair to say by the Snes the experience was looking dated, but the inclusion of a more structured design, including stage bosses, different moons to save and a few different weapons to play with, manages to sprinkle some much needed polish into gameplay.
It's fast paced & frantic action, often leaving a death feeling hard done by due to the twitchy controls and onslaught of tricky enemies. It's s tough to handle at first but with practice and proper use of the Cloak and special weapons, the game becomes ever more rewarding in its simplicity. The payoff in there now being a proper ending to aim for is also a very welcome one.
A password offered after moving to a new moon renders beating the many stages achievable if still a little too challenging for some?
A decent game that's aged well and only seems to offer more the older it gets. Here's to a ps5 version!?
