-Ah Compile! Like slipping on your favourite jumper. Warm, comfy, reliable. Yes, Compile know how to make a shooter and their skills in programming good games steps beyond the confines of simply the Snes too. Almost all 3rd generation consoles have a Compile shooter; from the awesome Blazing Lazers on T-16, to the incredibly pricey MUSHA Aleste on Megadrive, to the enjoyable Robo Aleste on MegaCD. Besides similarities in gameplay mechanics, what they boast in common, is a sheer level of excellence.
What's particularly impressive about the design of these especially comes from the ability to create a simialr style of gameplay that's tailored perfectly to each console, leaving each installment both technically impressive but equally enjoyable & original to play, even for those who've gorged elsewhere. They even managed to produce a shump on the Snes with zero slowdown! That really is a feat!
Part of what makes these Compile shumps so much fun comes from the powerup system. 8 options of very different firepower delivers the perfect balance of gameplay variety other shumps simply fail to achieve.
The health system is fair, allowing you to build shields through constant pickups to survive a small number of hits. Stages are creative & interesting and boss encounters are memorable and challenging.
It's true its one of the easier offerings in its genre, especially thanks to infinite continues but that doesn't hinder the enjoyment factor any.
While its not my favourite shump on the Snes, it easily up there among the best. A must have for any serious shooter fans.
