REVIEW: (Originally posted on Instagram)
-It was never my favourite cartoon, despite (or perhaps because) the almost impossible fact that once, even a micro second of that theme tune got registered by your eardrums, you're married to it for the next week! Even now it cycles over & over in my head and probably yours too now.. yeh sorry for that!
Well the infamous tune does make an appearance here, as does near perfect animation of those bizzare Animaniacs, honestly what are they? Cats? Dogs?
As always Konami handle the franchise with their usual love and attention, rendering the final look an extremely attractive one. The big, colourful stages are packed with constantly evolving gameplay & the sprite animation is gorgeous. The wacky charm of the cartoon is brought to life effortlessly.
It's shame the same accolades cannot be handed to other areas of the game, alas this sadly is not one of Konami's masterpieces.
Let's start with the life thing! So there are 3 of you right? You can switch between them on the fly but they seem to offer nothing different? If you lose an Animanic, then you carry on with the next. That's fine, however when you lose your third and final Animanic, it's game over, you only get to continue with just the 1! That's a bit mean! It wouldn't feel so unfair if the AI wasnt absolutely abominable at keeping your spare Animanics breathing. Instead most of the time, they'll hurl themselves off a cliff or into a spike pit. Even continues are a strange one, requiring pure luck from a fruit machine constantly spinning as you collect coins. Its original I guess, but is it more fun than simply having me collect actual lives and continues?
I have to mention the bullshit surrounding movement. Horizontally your movement feels as smooth as you'd expect from a Konami platformer. Vertically however, you appear to be snapped to a grid making the change between the two, confusing & awkward to manoeuvre when in trouble.
Issues aside, it is a pretty fun, straightforward & relatively painless play. A side story requiring the Animanics to return all the WB scripts across the 4 stages does offer some replay value but it wasn't enough to tempt me back in for a 2nd dip this time.
