-What's not to love about this classic 90s cartoon? A wonderful concept that was action packed, funny and wonderfully inventive. A video game feels almost too perfect not to make, especially sat next to some far more bizzare adaptations of the era (Time Trax anyone?).
Well Hudson Soft took on the challenge of trying to convert this beloved franchise into 16 bit via the unsurprising form of yet another colourful platformer. Given the genre is pretty much Hudson's bread and butter besides Bomberman, it's no surprise they were able to produce a decent looking game.
The shows iconic inventory of gadgets, is perfect for giving Hudson the basis to produce an interesting array of items to use and they succeed in delivery. Unlike some other bloated inventories in platfomers such as Bugs Bunny Rabbit Rampage, nearly all items are varied enough to prove useful in different scenarios. The mechanics of levelling up items and collecting hats for ammo is also well balanced, providing different options for progression without allowing you to spam your way through game.
Sadly, like many Hudson offerings, the fundamental mechanics aren't perfect. There's a choppiness to movement I don't like (ie zero skid) which makes movement fiddly. This can be a problem in later levels when the gameplay often involves traversing playfields full of springs, conveyer belts and moving platforms. Its the kind of jumbled platforming madness I normally expect from cheap NES games like Darkman or Robocop, at least the unfair factor is far more mild.
The challenge is fairly tame overall, coming exclusively from stage design as bosses prove a laughable affair. Infinite continues remove any anxiety and make this beatable for everyone.
