-I hold Taito in high regard. The Bubble Bobble series alone I think is outstanding and you only have to play the Taito Legends series to see just how many other landmark games the company produced. I think it's fair to say their golden years came throughout the 80s and early 90s, with many of their most fond franchises ruling the arcades at the time. Not everything was exactly a roaring success however and Taitos legacy with Shumps (excluding the Grandaddy of them all; Space Invaders), hasn't exactly all come out smelling of roses. Their most successful series is of course; Darius and while its relatively well known, certain titles are not particularly well recieved.
The Snes especially, for which it recieved the series sequel 'Darius Twin', presumably named so for its ability to support simultaneous 2 player action. Seeing as such a feat was achieved many times on the NES, its hardly that groundbreaking in 16-bit.
In truth, the 91 release date could well have appeared in 8-bit. For its time, it isn't a bad looking game but fundamentally there's nothing here that screams Next Gen at you.
The biggest issue is that the game lacks the right level of depth in firepower. Oh there's plenty of variety, with each powerup improving your two fire options almost infinitely. The issue is nothing ever evolves beyond firing along the same 5 angles. Yes you gain more size and power to your lasers but the mechanics remains the same throughout, ergo the fun factor never takes a much needed energy boost. Its all just kinda bland.
Even the challenge falls on the easier side of shumps, with many simple enemies and basic boss patterns. The reality of 2 lives being your only chance of defeating 7 stages is significant however. Though you can amass shields to absorb some damage, one hit deaths aren't uncommon so practice is definitely required to successfully beat this, I did resort to a Pause Buffering at times.
This was my first experience of the Darius series and I have to say I wasn't blown away. I know the PS1 saw a number of more popular entries through Darius Gaiden and Ray Crisis, so perhaps all is not lost!
