A playthrough of the potential sub-boss Anna Williams in the arcade version of Namco's Tekken 1.

Anna is the sultry sister of Nina. Nina has a character has more or less always been an all-business-all-the-time sort of character, who in contrast to most female characters of the era was particularly sexualised in any way (from my recollection, at least), and Anna effectively stands as a contrast to that. Anna and Nina have an extremely petty rivalry together (hell, Nina's Tekken 1 ending is her slapping Anna for accusing her of stealing one of her shoes...only for Nina to reveal secretly that she actually did steal it), and it creates a pretty funny contrast for a character like Nina who is otherwise quite stern and stoic. One thing I'm going to remark quite a bit is that Tekken probably has the best designs and the best gameplay styles for its female characters of any fighting game series. Usually, female characters in fighting games usually have a slightly more awkward style of play, particularly in 2D titles where they either rely on more acrobatic manoeuvres (Mai, Chun Li, Shermie, Cammy, etc.) or are meant to be tongue-in-cheek with absurd levels of power (Hinako in KOF as a good example of that). The Tekken series subverts that heavily by having its female characters generally play quite straight; they still tend to utilise acrobatic movesets, but on the whole they seem as easy to utilise as the male characters of the game, sometimes more in fact. Couple this with some extremely strong, unique designs, and it's probably the only fighting game series I can think of where I'd rather play as a female character in general, what with the likes of Jun, Asuka, Lili, Julia, Christie and of course Nina and Anna all providing unique and enjoyable styles of play. It's one of those series which really plays to its strength by its emphasis on juggles, and its always managed to have a real sense of cohesion as a series as a result.

All that is perhaps a bit hyperbolic here though, as Anna is more or less just a clone of Nina here. That's perfectly good of course, as Anna is more or less just the vaguely villainous version of her sister, but in actuality Anna really struggles to find her identity in terms of fighting style really up until about Tekken 5 or so - which isn't perhaps the best for us, as she remains a hidden character in nearly every game until 5. Still, she's quite competent here and serves the purpose she's supposed to serve as Nina's sub-boss. Another generally great character.

Also, yeah, I'm finally using custom thumbnails now. Got pretty fed up with getting shitty thumbnails for my vids, so thought it was about time I dealt with that. I'm not sure I'll do it with every game, but for the Tekken series where icons are so easy to make I thought it was a good idea.
