#642 Ehrgeiz (PS1) Exclusive Hidden Characters (1/5): Zack playthrough.
A playthrough of the exclusive hidden character Zack in the PS1 port of Ehrgeiz.
The PS1 port of Ehrgeiz adds no less than five hidden characters exclusive to the game itself, as well as four new characters from FFVII. The first of these we'll be covering is Zack, who unsurprisingly to fans of the game is pretty much just a model-swap of Cloud.
Zack's inclusion here is a bit bizarre, until you realise that the other FF7 characters added are just all model-swaps of pre-existing characters. This was a poor choice on DreamFactory's part, because why would I play as an original character when I could play as their Final Fantasy variant? Zack as a result is quite a cheap way to add another character into the game, being that he might well just be Cloud but with a different skin. Although Zack's character was considerably improved upon in the FF7-complilation (particularly in the fantastic Crisis Core), his actual presence in the game itself is near on non-existent, and he exists more or less for the sole purpose of a plot-twist. Although, somehow, Tifa knows his name, even though I don't think he ever told it to her. FF7's writing was a bit nutty, but then again most of the cinematic FF games have been. FFX's plot had more twists and turns than a Congolese backroad and FFXIII's plot was such nonsense it wouldn't have surprised me if it would inspired by one of Charlie Manson's deluded fantasies
I honestly didn't really see much point playing as Zack, other than the novelty of playing as yet another FF7 character in a fighting game. Those who are more skilled at this game may well be able to tell some differences, but I couldn't personally. And just like Cloud, you can absolutely chop people to pieces with that buster sword, making quick work of them in no time at all. I think it's a shame they went with Zack over Cid, but that's what we've got. At least the other characters are a bit more interesting.
