A Turn Based RPG Tech Dungeon Deckbuilder – Beneath Oresa –
Beneath Oresa is a Turn Based, RPG Sci-Fi Roguelike Deckbuilder that is actually good!
It combines random Sci-Fi Tech Dungeon layouts and a fun, combat focused feel that looks great.
I’m not one who usually likes card games, but Beneath Oresa feels great!
The card combat here feels great!
Well done!
Card Based Combat in a Science Fantasy World:
Beneath Oresa combat runs on a 3 AP system, where you always act first, and where enemies show what they’re going to do above their head; I guess your character is just very good at reading the enemy and moving fast.
There is a default 6 card draw, and, like many card games, your block / guard is reset every round, as is your hand, for most cards at least, so the planning is usually restricted to 1 round.
There are many exceptions though, as some cards have “Anchor”, which means that are not discarded at the end of your turn, very good to know!
There are also the exact opposite kinds of cards, which have “Fading”, which can only be played once per combat, but you get them back into your hand after the fight.
A unique thing about combat in Beneath Oresa is that the battlefield is broken down into near and far, with both certain enemy attacks, and some of your own, being more effective the closer / further away you are.
To move into a zone, you melee attack a target in that zone, moving adjacent to the selected target; this is very handy, as ranged units are usually much less effective at shoot you up close while your beating them down!
The RPG in Beneath Oresa:
Right at the start, Beneath Oresa offers plenty of player RPG choice, which is great to see!
Right at the start, you pick from 1 of 4 expeditions, which offer 1 of 4 perks at the start: +1 random card to the base deck, +10 max hp –10 current hp, 10 hp, +5 max hp, or each champion combat granting 15 armor at the start of combat.
When you clear a fight, you pick 1 of 3 cards; no apparent ability to skip the draw; fine
Stronger elite fights also grants passives; called Antiqorums; pick 1 of 3; they are very powerful, like starting every combat with free 10 block, each round enemies take 3 damage, or on the 1st or 2nd round gain +1AP and 1 card.
Each card also has 2 different upgrade paths; nice.
You can find 1 use cards too; like tech potions that grant you more AP for that turn, or more attack power; very nice!
Save them for the boss!
There are 3 factions, with 3 characters to unlock, with you only starting with 1 available though.
The starting default character: Sora, starts with a combat bot who lvls up as you pick the right exploration events, though you can always pick the event that strengthens your own cards instead.
Sora seems to be all about managing your viruses, building virus load to empower her attacks by how many viruses she has currently in her entire deck, both draw and discard piles.
Meta Progression:
There are 8 characters to unlock, along with 6 helpers; who grant you bonus cards when played, but don’t directly fight with you.
You gain points depending on how far you got, to give some idea on the progression: I got up to lvl 2 on my first run, just barely dying at the first boss; while on my 2nd run, I got to dungeon lvl 3, and died; making it to meta progression lvl 6, with about 2 hours in-game.
You also seem to unlock new technique cards as you gain more meta progression lvls; ok.
Beneath Oresa is a fun, Turn Based RPG Sci-Fi Roguelike Deckbuilder with randomized Tech Dungeons that is actually good!
