An Indie Action Roguelike RPG Influenced by Magicka! – Time of the Wizard Demo –
Time of the Wizard is an Indie, Action Roguelike RPG Dungeon Crawler influenced by Magicka!
Time of the Wizard is a very indie take on Magicka, but envisioned as an Action Roguelike with random dungeon lvls!
So, it’s a Roguelike, sort of Magicka like?
Ok.
A Roguelike Magicka like:
Sort of
Like Magicka, Time of the Wizard has the on the fly spell mixing that so defines the game, with the magic mixing here occurring in a slow time like mode, so you are less likely to get blasted down while trying to complete your spell!
Unlike Magicka, Time of the Wizard gives you a dash, so this wizard here can really move to avoid a hit, and Time of the Wizard also has a mana system, so you have to manage that mana bar to keep your spell flying.
This is in sharp contrast to Magicka, which had no mana bar, and was all about quickly entering those memorized spell combos in real time: don’t mess up! No Pressure!
I find the built-in slow time spell mixing and mana dash system really makes the game more manageable compared to Magicka, and I really like random dungeons, and finding fun artifacts to mix up my run,
so Time of the Wizard is very appealing to me; maybe to you too?
The RPG in the Action Roguelike:
Right at the start, you get to pick 1 of 3 random artifacts, letting the player customize their play-through right at the start; good!
Think artifacts that grant stronger fire magic, but weaker everything else, or make your character huge, or rubber spells; which makes all your spells bounce off walls, or get a little ghost buddy who helps you fight; fun and impactful choices like that.
As you clear rooms and destroy monsters with your magical powers, you get gold, used to purchase new artifacts, and get more cool powers, or potions to keep you going, or keys to open locked doors.
So, while you do not directly get experience for killing monsters, you do get gold which is used to become stronger in player chosen ways, so an RPG ye be Time of the Wizard!
The game is called Time of the Wizard, so your wizard character starts with magic spells:
in this case, Arcane, Fire and Earth spells.
Like in Magicka mentioned above, you can mix and match these three spell schools to create different spells, with 5 of the other schools not currently available in this early demo.
Think rolling double Arcane + Arcane, for the arcane laser!
Or combine Arcane + Fire for a Tri Acid cone that poisons enemies.
Lob Lava balls with Earth + Fire
Or do the unthinkable and combine Arcane + Earth + Earth, and get a sword!
Go blademage, go!
Note: This is an early look at Time of the Wizard so any bugs or other oddness is not representative of the final product.
Still, Time of the Wizard is a very indie take on Magicka, envisioned as an Action Roguelike RPG with random dungeon lvls, and is easily well worth a wishlist and a watch.
