A Fun First Person, RPG Dungeon Crawler – Hark the Ghoul Demo – #02
Hark the Ghoul is an Indie, Hack and Slash, First Person RPG Dungeon Crawler, an Indie King’s Field like, with A Kick!
I’m being literal here!
A King’s Field Like?
Yep!
Hark the Ghoul has the combat, the exploration focus, and the movement feel of old King’s Field, and is
rocking the very retro PSX / PS1 look; gritty and grainy.
Plus, it has a kick!
And this kick really matters, as you can kick barrels, pots, and rocks into foes to rock their world!
Kick big rocks into mega bugs and squash them flat!
Big damage here; never skip leg day!
A Strong Exploration Focus:
The kick also serves an exploration focus too, as you can kick big crates and barrels around, then platform up to areas you previously could not reach, serving as a means of dungeon progression as well, which always feels nice to see.
As a King’s Field like, Hark the Ghoul has a very strong exploration focus.
There is loot to find hidden all over the place: hidden in pots, in cocoons, in darken nooks, up on high ledges, really encouraging the player to explore their dungeon world.
This loot is usually silver coins, maybe consumables like grenades, or yummy, healing bark, and rarely, even Nectar; used to empower yourself at the magic tree; fun.
Also, objects falling from great heights often break, giving you an example of what happens to you if you don’t respect dungeon gravity!
Visual storytelling is best.
Hark the Ghoul: The RPG
The very Strong Exploration Focus also ties into the RPG character progression as well, as right by the start; there is a small, yet visually striking, tree.
This Sapling tree handles your lvls perks; exchanging Nectar for your choice of powerful character upgrades: +15 movement speed, +25 jump height, +50 max hp, +50 max mana, 3 healing on hit, +10% attack speed, or +1 of all types of max consumables.
You also save at the sapling tree.
Cutting down monsters grants you exp, and you get silver coins sometimes, and when you lvl up, you get another guaranteed Nectar; nice.
Additionally, Right at the start; there are 9 different backgrounds to pick; awesome!
The RPG is very present in Hark the Ghoul; it is very good to see.
Controller Support is present, as is good old mouse and keyboard.
I went the mouse and keyboard in the above video mostly, though the gamepad did feel good as well.
Note: This is an early look at the Steam demo for Hark the Ghoul so any bugs or other oddness is not representative of the final product.
Still, Hark the Ghoul is an Indie, Hack and Slash, First Person RPG Dungeon Crawler, an Indie King’s Field like, with A Kick, and is easily well worth a wishlist and a watch.
