Assault Android Cactus (PC/Steam)
Early Access Version 150115c (2015 Jan 15)

Stage 3-4: Revolution (11.0)
S+ run using Peanut - using infinite drill circles trick!

So... a legitimate use for Peanut's infinite drill circles trick? Well... maybe. =)

Peanut's "infinite drill circles" (IDC) trick:

In some of the circular arenas, if Peanut uses the Drill Lance along the outer wall, she can circle the arena over and over and over again forever... or at least until her battery runs out! This trick only works counter-clockwise (the Drill Lance is actually slightly closer to Peanut's right side, so that allows it to more smoothly follow the curve of the wall when the wall is to the right), and only on certain levels (as of Update 11.0, the levels I've found it works on are: Oxygen, Revolution, Embryo, Vespula, Justice, Venom, Boss Rush, Infinity Drive, and Daily Drive).

The IDC trick was discovered by (or at least first reported by) ModusPwnens, who described it as "a lot of fun". I tried it out, and it was. =) Anyway, Sycle (of Witch Beam) expressed some curiosity at the time about whether it might actually have some legitimate in-game use. So I did a little bit of testing, but honestly, it didn't really seem all that useful, compared to using Peanut's abilities in more traditional fashions.

More recently, though, after doing the trick mostly by accident in a recent Daily Drive, I started to wonder about this once more. So I spent some time on Revolution, experimenting with the IDC trick, to see if I could figure out some way to use it in combat.

My original thought was that maybe it could be used to zoom over to a cluster of enemies on the far side of the arena, using the unobstructed path along the outside wall, instead of trying to cut through (and probably bump into) the maze of rotating walls in the central area. In theory, this was a good idea, but in practice, the enemies on the far side tended not to stay on the far side for very long, because pretty much every enemy in the game will always be trying to move towards you. So in a 1P game, it's unlikely to be all that useful... but in a 2P, 3P, or 4P game, if an ally is on the far side (and attracting the attention of enemies over there), you could probably use this trick to quickly get Peanut over there to help. =)

In a 1P game, however, the most useful way to use the IDC seemed to be to re-aim the Drill Lance towards an enemy in the central area (after circling around to its side or back). So basically, using the IDC to flank an enemy, to avoid obstructions or hazards you'd encounter on a more direct path.

So anyway, I practiced with this technique ("IDC-flanking"?) on Revolution a bunch, and came to the following conclusions:

Peanut's "infinite drill circles" trick:
- Can actually be used in combat! More effectively, it turns out, than I'd initially thought it could! =)
- However, in general, it does seem to be less efficient than using more traditional strategies with Peanut (especially if you're going for an S+, but even if you're not).

Anyway, I had fun testing this out. So here's one of my better runs using the "infinite drill circles" trick. =)

0:05 Used the IDC to circle the arena a couple of times, then destroyed a red spider.
0:41 Used the IDC to flank and destroy a mine brute.
1:15 Used the IDC to flank and destroy a large jellyfish.
