Battletoads (Arcade) CO-OP Playthrough / The Dark Queen is causing havoc in the galaxy..... again !!
Battletoads (1994) by Rare is the next installment in one of the most challenging game series ever created. Most people associate the brand with the first part of the game, which came out for the Nes in 91. It was a very successful genre mix that tried to surprise us at every opportunity. Here it already looks a little different, as the gameplay mainly focuses on beat'em up elements. 70% of the game is a walking brawl and the rest is a mix of platformer, run and gun with a pinch of vertical/horizontal shmup :P That's how I personally see it.In the game we take on the role of a group of three brave frogs Rash, Zitz and Pimple able to morph their bodies for combat purposes. They are fighting against a group that wants world domination, led by the Dark Queen. Everything from the graphics, music to the gameplay is done really solidly here. The sprites are large and nicely animated, especially the animations of morphing frogs' body parts into various weapons are really phenomenally done here . The maps are also very nicely constructed, full of details with moving background elements and all this is still accompanied by parallax scrolling. The game makes spectacular use of depth effects, such as something from the background coming towards us, it looks really good and was rather rarely used/seen in those days. Music also deserves to be mentioned as it is very rhythmic and dynamic with rock elements, which fits very well with the action accompanying this game almost from beginning to end. As for the depth of the combat system, it is very basic. There are no combinations of blows here, just rather standard attacks that we use over and over again. The standard basic combination, attack from running, jumping and knocking down a knocked down opponent. Depending on the opponents, you can also grab them. Thanks to the flashy morphing animations, these combos don't get as boring as the basic blows in similar games and each hit gives great satisfaction. Compared to other games in the series, here the developers decided not to boorish and added brutality effects to these epic morph animations. Blood pours down during stronger attacks or executions :P You have to admit that the drill going into the face of a knocked down rat, is impressive :) and since we are a fan of violent games, we welcome it with open arms. Especially since there was never anything like this in the earlier installments. Is the game as difficult as the previous ones? It's hard to say because arcade games are practically 95% difficult, and here we didn't really feel the difference. True, "a bit" of these credits were used to complete the game, so it's safe to say that if you were playing on a real machine and putting your hard-earned money into it, you would definitely be hurt that the frogs aren't very resistant, which would significantly reduce the content of your wallets. The only thing we didn't like was the ending, because we expected something completely different :P Battletoads is definitely a game worth investing your time in, because it's done perfectly in almost every respect. We definitely recommend it.
