Blue Mountain is the final mode in BLOOD+ One Night Kiss, unlocked after beating Perfect Kiss. It's a boss rush mode as Aoyama, fighting all eighteen bosses in a row. Of all things, I was most excited about getting to this mode as part of my full game documentation. Not only does it give Aoyama the spotlight in a reasonably fun and challenging mode, nobody else has uploaded footage of Blue Mountain Mode as far as I can tell. Maybe I didn't search under the right terms, but either way, I'm glad I can fill the void for this niche mode of a niche-of-the-niche experience.
For the archival purposes, I've exported the full Twitch VOD with commentary (unlisted, as usual): https://youtu.be/RCI6u9dFeXU?t=3255
The full VOD includes two failed attempts, the successful attempt that makes up the contents of this video, and some minor glitch testing at the end. For convenience, the link above starts the video at the successful attempt. If it piques your interest, those failed attempts are still quite good; I was playing so well across the board that I made it to the penultimate boss both times, meaning you still get a lot of solid gameplay up until the deaths.
Blue Mountain Mode is a lot of fun even if it can't fully overcome some of ONK's less-than-savory quirks. Aoyama is of course the man, and having a mode all to his own is great. In many ways, it's a cathartic experience that delivers a healthy challenge overall (with a handful of decidedly unhealthy moments).
I have a dedicated guide for Blue Mountain (https://www.speedrun.com/bloodplusonk/guides/07k9r -), but here are some brief notes:
-Blue Mountain Mode must be done in one sitting. You cannot save and you do not heal between bosses. At best, you get one revive if you die, which happened in this attempt at 12:00.
-The meat of this video was done in one sitting without breaks, but I did splice in the intro separately; I wanted to linger at the first few screens for the video, but I didn't want to repeat those motions every single attempt, so the intro footage comes from the first failed attempt and the rest of the footage from the successful attempt.
-I don't really know what happened at the start of the first boss. Seems like Aoyama teleported or something.
-I watched all of the brief cutscenes, but it's possible to skip them.
-Aoyama takes on all eighteen bosses, including Saya's. Saya's bosses obviously aren't designed to be fought with Aoyama, so some of them can be slaughtered by button mashing. That said, there are still some tricky fights (including Aoyama's own bosses, for that matter), and having to string them all together is rather exhausting (but in a good way). Even if some bosses are laughable, Blue Mountain is still a boss rush of eighteen separate bosses, so it's definitely not a pushover.
-If I had to say anything about the bosses themselves, the "barrier" bosses in the lab are some of the worst. It's a novel concept, but in practice, the mechanics don't quite come together; auto lock-on focuses on the barriers, meaning my back is often to the monster itself, leaving me open. The penultimate boss is also more annoying than she should be due to auto lock-on breaking too easily, hence why both failed attempts died there.
-I died at 12:00 (using the single revive), and truth be told, it was really my fault. After the previous "barrier" boss nearly killed me, I was at low health and rather annoyed, so I absentmindly missed the Hagi Guard that would have saved me. Not my finest moment, but hey, I still made it to the end anyway!
-Aoyama only has a six-shot gun, but since this is still a NG+ file, he has his fast fire rate. Annoyingly, it also keeps the dreadful element from Perfect Kiss where the camera will sometimes shift to the boss's perspective.
-Beating Blue Mountain unlocks Saya's final uniform, which I show at the very end.
As excited as I was to get to Blue Mountain, I was admittedly a little nervous starting the stream as I was doubting if I could beat it in one session. When I first went through it weeks ago on my own, it took me over six hours to beat (across two sessions), so I was really worried that I was going to get stuck in a rut. Thankfully, it only took me three tries to get it done here, and I'm still over the moon about how well it went.
And with that, this Twitch/Youtube file is complete! I've shown as much of BLOOD+ One Night Kiss as I possibly could, and I'm happy that I've documented basically everything from this niche but absolutely fascinating piece of Suda 51/Grasshopper Manufacture history. That said, I still have a couple of stray videos planned for the near future, so look out for those!
