CiB Game Boy Theater - Jungle Strike and Dr. Franken II (Episode 89)
2The Original Game Boy is one of the biggest 'game changers' in the history of video games, and essentially ushered in the popularity of handheld games. There are many games that will be classic forever. There are, however, a much, much higher number of simply awful, forgettable, or downright weird games. CiB Game Boy Theater shows you some of the games you might not (and shouldn't be...) familiar with.
Jungle Strike was released in 1995 for the Game Boy --- this was a port, after the game was released on pretty much every other system possible. Jungle Strike was developed by Granite Bay Software (Soviet, Urban, and Jungle Strike) and published by good ol' EA. Jungle Strike was highly praised at release, but I have to admit: I don't get it. I realize the Game Boy version is going to be worse than the console versions, but: I don't get it. At least I got to blow up a couple friendly buildings before I figured out was going on.
The Adventures of Dr. Franken II was released in 1997 (wow!) for the Game Boy. It was developed by Motivetime Ltd. (Joe & Mac, Dr. Franken, Test Drive: Off-Road), and published by Elite Systems (Dragon's Lair, Gremlins 2, Ikari Warriors).
Technically - and I mean strictly technically - Dr. Franken II is a perfect sequel to Dr. Franken I. It is a very similar game style, but improves the original in every way - better gameplay, sound, graphics, etc. Unfortunately, Dr. Franken I is horrible (you can find our review on Episode 9), and Dr. Franken II is, at best, and I'm being generous here - 'fine'. If you want another Game Boy game that you can't figure out where you're going in 5 minutes --- you -COULD- do worse. Thanks for watching!
